I am a late twenty-something networking geek and part time college instructor in Connecticut. I'm a not-so-newlywed and first time home owner (can you say busy?!?!). I originally said "If this web page thing goes to my head I'll throw in something about my photography and dredge up a bunch of scaned images to chew up bandwidth". Apparently it has. My primary place of employment is Ensign-Bickford Industries, Inc. where I hold the title of "Network Operations Manager" (it used to be "Sr. Network Specialist"). My baliwick is essentially everything from the NIC in the user's PC back through the wiring plant and network infrastructre (LAN and WAN) into the servers, as well as the telephone, voicemail, and video-conferencing systems. I have a staff of three and am grateful for each of them. We're a NetWare - UNIX - AS/400 shop. In terms of direct administration, I conentrate on NetWare and a bit of UNIX. My moonlighting job is teaching an introductory networking class to students in the Computer Systems Technology program at Northwestern Connecticut Community Technical College. 1999 is my fourth year of teaching at NCCC. Last year I tried out something new by posting class materials on the web. The experiment was a success. So, for this year I've decided to get around my inability to find a level-appropriate text book for the clas by writing one: Mr. Shipman's Network Primer. I think that I may have just taken that leap off into total geekhood - I just pulled a wire into my living-room so that I can hook a laptop up to the household network and compute from the couch. I'm also contemplating dropping a wire into the master bedroom. I'm very lucky in that I have an understanding wife. The one thing that (I think) keeps me from descending into unreclaimed nerdity is that I didn't drive into work this weekend to get my wiring tools -- I'll finish the job Monday night. Somehow, the fact that I have the patience to wait for a techno-toy and won't grossly inconvenience myslef to get it (work is 40 minutes away) makes a difference in my mind. Additional information: So, from the above you might assume that I must have something like an MS in computer science, right? Well, no. I hold a BA in History from the University of Connecticut. It's a long story, but involves starting out at UConn as a CS major, flunking math 110 (Calc 1), a girl, and a few other things. The girl is long gone, my college years are a ways behind me, and I'm working in my intended field anyway. So, I guess that all-in-all things turned out pretty well. I'm hoping that this web site won't turn into another one of those semi-stagnant exercises in narcissism that are most personal home pages. Hence the statement of purpose, and the intent to focus on delivering useful, or at least entertaining and thought provoking, information. The last things you'll find here are pictures of my cats, my truck, my house, my wife, and all that other stuff. (You know what I mean.) So, I hope that what you find here proves useful, enjoyable, or enlightening. And, please pardon any typos. I'll fix them all eventually.
